Facts
- Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all penguin species, standing up to 4 feet tall and weighing up to 88 pounds.
- They can dive deeper than any other bird, reaching depths of over 1,800 feet and holding their breath for up to 20 minutes!
- Emperor penguins love to slide on their bellies across the ice, which is called tobogganing, and it helps them move quickly.
- Male emperor penguins are super dads. They keep the eggs warm on their feet for about two months while the moms go to the sea to feed.

The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the largest of all penguin species, distinguished by its impressive size and striking appearance. Adult emperor penguins can reach heights of up to 4 feet and weigh between 55 to 88 pounds. They have a unique color pattern, with black heads, backs, and flippers, contrasted by white bellies and pale yellow patches on their necks and upper chests. This coloration provides excellent camouflage in their icy environment.
Emperor penguins are well adapted to the extreme cold of their Antarctic habitat. Their dense feathers provide insulation, while a thick layer of blubber helps maintain body heat. They huddle together in large groups to conserve warmth, especially during the harsh winter months. These huddles can consist of thousands of individuals, with penguins taking turns moving from the outer, colder areas to the warmer center.
One of the most remarkable aspects of emperor penguins is their breeding behavior. They are the only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter. After a courtship period, the female lays a single egg and transfers it to the male. The male balances the egg on his feet and covers it with a flap of skin called a brood pouch to keep it warm. During this incubation period, which lasts about 65 days, the male fasts and relies on his fat reserves for energy. The female returns to the sea to feed and returns just before the egg hatches, allowing the male to finally go and replenish his energy.
Emperor penguins are exceptional divers, capable of reaching depths of over 1,800 feet and holding their breath for up to 20 minutes. Their diet mainly consists of fish, squid, and krill, which they catch during their underwater forays. These penguins are also known for their ability to toboggan, or slide on their bellies across the ice, using their flippers and feet to propel themselves forward. This method of travel is energy-efficient and allows them to move quickly over the ice.
